10% of the population experiences depression in a year - more in older age groups. Though intense sadness may need help it is much more than feeling sad.

Depression is complex and has a variety of forms - physical and mental. Beside feeling sad and withdrawn - low energy, negative thought patterns and self critical attitude predominate. Often there is angry or aggressive behaviour or unpredictable mood swings. Generally there is loss of sleep or loss of interest in work, sex, life and the future. Alternatively frantic life patterns and erratic behaviour may be used to avoid and suppress underlying feelings - leading to periodic exhaustion & collapse.

It may be provoked by life crises - or through stress accumulated through several disturbing episodes. Deeper causes - of which we may not be aware - may have undermined or never allowed a sense of vitality - good relationships - or genuine joy in life. A proper course of  therapy for depression can find a cure for depression through resolving such issues.

Because of  the de-energising effects of depression it can be hard to arrest a downward spiral. Struggling to cope with depression too long without the right depression help and support can be counter-productive.  Medical treatment for depression may be vital in a crisis or for extreme cases, With the right guidance - you can learn to recognise your own warning signs and develop personal strategies to stave off or  deal with depression - effectively.

Therapy treatment for depression follows a well-structured course.  In crisis, a supportive behavioural regime is devised to stabilise the situation. Underlying states and thought patterns are examined and steps taken to free you from negative patterns. Thorough analysis at this stage is vital. Having identified the specific patterns and processes you experience you discover how to deal with depression effectively.

There occurs through  re-building resources in a new more resilient way. Behavioural techniques, Ericksonian Hypnosis and NLP may all be brought into play.

Then - reconnected with more stable and resourceful states - as energy increases, balance and control is re-established. Any necessary decisions and life changes can be examined. Then you return refreshed to the fray with robust and more effective strategies for managing life.
