DIFFERENT STYLES OF HYPNOSIS >> Home Page
Hypnosis induces states of awareness which free us from everyday thinking to access processes free from a limiting ‘normal’ mindset. They also relax ‘normal’ time constraints and can even change the way our body operates !
We can examine experience from new viewpoints and construct better ways to manage previously difficult situations - break through conscious and unconscious limits - create new capabilities & lead fuller more confident lives.
' FORMAL HYPNOSIS' : -
In popular imagination, this entails eye-closure & reduced or lost external awareness. Command and Standard Induction Approaches ( see below ) generally employ only formal hypnosis. People not achieving a satisfactorily deep state through these methods are ( mistakenly ) described as ' not good subjects '. Informal methods are less spectacular - but generally more effective.
'INFORMAL HYPNOSIS' : -
Primarily used in competent Ericksonian work ( see link below ). Work is adapted entirely to the way the individual constructs and represents their own experience. Beneficial hypnotic suggestion is interleaved with ordinary exchanges - so change is accomplished in a flowing, totally natural way.
Generally one experiences comfortable &reflective dialogue - often with engaging and thought provoking content. Deeper states - which tend to develop spontaneously as work gets engrossing - may be used for particular purposes..
In more complicated cases - inter-related processes need to be adjusted over time. I often employ personally designed scripts & MP3 recordings to direct unconscious process. These are necessarily complex and seem to have different content and alternative meanings on different hearings as the process advances.
You may have little recollection of what happens - though you are aware of it at the time. But situations which once defeated best efforts are now met with perfectly adequate attitudes and resources which seem effortlessly available.
Practitioners of Ericksonian mode - who have extensive training, continuing professional development & supervision - can be found in the UKCP Register of Practitioners - the largest reputable multi-disciplinary register of professionally trained and regulated therapists in Europe.
' COMMAND HYPNOSIS' : -
Seen in popular TV entertainments - relies on the selection of very suggestible people who respond to stereotyped and programmed - somewhat domineering script or procedures. This is rigid and inflexible and risky; it is considered disrespectful by Ericksonians. Many practitioners use this approach.
' STANDARD INDUCTION HYPNOSIS' : -
Uses prepared scripts which take no account of individual differences - using the same scripted routines for all conditions and types of person. Many internet sites sell hypnotic scripts for downloading. The best such practitioners are systematic - but are limited in the range & complexity of conditions that might respond. Some have a length of experience - many practice part-time to earn extra cash - have very short trainings & no professional supervision.
