For all smokers,  smoking perpetuates at least one powerful illusion.

That it reduces stress.  As blood levels of nicotine reduce - Nicotine Craving and stress levels rise. We become more aware of being stressed.  Smoking then raises nicotine levels - sedates that craving - and we feel less stressed.

So the illusion is complete ! Smoking only reduces the stress that nicotine craving causes....... In fact - tobacco took control -  and you became a tobacco junkie !

So why quit ? The facts about smoking and smoking side effects are sombre enough.

You pay for each cigarette many times !  Only once directly through the pocket - but more generally other ways !

       You smell bad and pollute the air for others - including the children you love -         incurring social disapproval and personal disgust.

       Your clothes and person are unclean - and your insides and all the intimate spaces you         occupy are bathed in a poisonous slick of sticky tar and stale smoke.

       You progressively look and feel worse. Your health deteriorates and you feel worse -          reducing your  whole quality of life.

       You are increasingly likely to suffer and  die badly.   ( See footnote )

But all this can change. It is a choice  ! You can quit smoking !

The benefits of not smoking are obvious and very quickly realised !  ( See footnote ) But  - as well as sticking on some nicotine patches - you might need some expert help !

Smoking cessation is a significant life change and needs to be tackled systematically. To be effective - we need to make a thorough analysis of what goes on - to identify the process clearly and completely.

How is the habit made up ? What are the triggers ?  What  myths and illusions justify ? Who or what situations are co-conspirators in your smoking plot ? What other purposes are you using it for ? What are you afraid will happen if you stop ?

Time for dialogue and reflection !   You come to me.

       For each trigger situation there are thousand things that could  happen instead.

       For each illusion or reasonable seeming justification - there are a thousand possible         alternative mindsets.

       For every element of resistance - there might be a thousand ways around.

       For every seeming loss - there are a thousand possible gains.

The aim is to find the specific solutions that will work for you.

Amongst other things - you may fear putting on weight - or not knowing what to do instead - or losing an old friend.  Your unconscious  mind can be prepared with well-formed strategies for coping with the change so that the system is not shocked into any adverse reaction.

It doesn't have to be a fight - you don’t have to give up smoking.
